National Bamboo Mission

Quick Summary: The National Bamboo Mission, now merged with MIDH, funds the full bamboo value chain - plantation, processing, and marketing - across 24 States/UTs to raise farm incomes and cut dependence on imported bamboo. It is open to all farmers in India.

About National Bamboo Mission

Following this landmark amendment, bamboo grown outside forest areas no longer falls under forest-produce regulations. In 2022-23, the National Bamboo Mission (NBM) was merged into the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH).

The restructured Mission concentrates on building out the entire bamboo value chain – connecting growers to consumers through planting material, plantations, infrastructure, skilled workforce, processing, marketing, and brand-building for micro, small, and medium enterprises – all under a cluster-based approach. It currently operates across 24 States/UTs and supports both raising bamboo plantations and setting up units for bio-energy extraction, activated carbon, charcoal, pellets, ethanol gasifiers, and similar products, for government bodies as well as private entrepreneurs.

The Mission also aims to revive the bamboo industry through innovation and policy backing that cuts carbon emissions and strengthens domestic manufacturing.

The Mission’s key objectives are: • Expanding bamboo plantation area on non-forest government and private land to boost farm income, build climate resilience, and secure quality raw material for industry – largely through plantations on farmers’ fields, homesteads, community land, cultivable wasteland, and along canals and water bodies. • Strengthening post-harvest management by setting up innovative primary processing units close to production sites, along with treatment and seasoning plants, preservation technology, and market infrastructure. • Driving market-oriented product development by supporting R&D, entrepreneurship, and business models at the micro, small, and medium scale that can feed larger industry. • Reviving India’s underdeveloped bamboo industry. • Building skills, capacity, and awareness across the bamboo sector, from production through to market demand. • Cutting reliance on imported bamboo and bamboo products by improving the productivity and industrial suitability of domestic raw material, thereby raising primary producers’ incomes.
