Land Ports Authority Of India (LPAI) Internship Scheme
About Land Ports Authority Of India (LPAI) Internship Scheme
The Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI) is running its annual internship programme for the 2025-26 academic year, giving students and research scholars from the BBIN countries (Bhutan, Bangladesh, India, and Nepal) a chance to gain hands-on exposure to land port development, cross-border trade, passenger movement, and border-related issues.
Enhanced Collaboration: For the first time, LPAI is opening the internship to capable students from across the BBIN region, India included — a step meant to encourage regional cooperation and the sharing of knowledge and perspectives on land port development within South Asia. Program Highlights: • Open to Students from BBIN Countries: Qualified students from India and other BBIN nations are welcome, creating a varied and enriching learning environment. • Focus on Northeast India: Applications are encouraged from students keen on tackling the distinctive land port development challenges and opportunities in India’s Northeastern states. • Diverse Research Methods: Interns may pursue policy-oriented research, social impact assessments, and economic impact assessments, among other approaches; earlier interns’ reports remain useful references for future work. • Program Duration: The internship runs for two months, with a possible extension to three months subject to approval.
Objective and Purpose a) The Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI) is a statutory body functioning under the Department of Border Management, Ministry of Home Affairs, created by the Land Ports Authority of India Act 2010 with effect from March 1, 2012. Under Section 11 of that Act, LPAI is responsible for building, maintaining sanitation at, and managing facilities for cross-border passengers and cargo at notified points on India’s international borders, while also deploying systems that balance security needs at Land Ports with the facilitation of cross-border trade. b) Recognising the rising interest and potential value that academic institutions and young scholars can bring, LPAI widened its Internship Program to cover BBIN (Bhutan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal) countries, aiming to build regional cooperation and knowledge-sharing by letting capable individuals from BBIN nations take part in LPAI’s work. c) Through this expanded internship programme, LPAI connects with young scholars from India and the neighbouring BBIN countries. The arrangement works both ways — bringing in varied perspectives, new ideas, and research assistance from a wider regional base, while giving young scholars a platform to contribute to projects of national and regional importance, deepen mutual understanding and cooperation among BBIN nations, and gain insight into government operations and nationally significant projects. > Duration
1. The internship lasts a minimum of eight weeks and can be extended up to three months, depending on the Authority’s needs and the intern’s availability. 1. Any extension beyond three months is granted only in exceptional cases, on the relevant Authority’s recommendation and with prior approval from the Secretary, LPAI
Placement
1. Interns are attached to the LPAI research team and/or to the head of the relevant Division within the Authority. 1. The internship is not a form of employment and carries no promise of future employment with the Authority
Submission of Paper
a) Supervisors draw up work plans and schedules that interns are expected to follow throughout. b) Once the internship ends, interns must send the Research team a report/paper describing their internship work, which the Member (Finance)/Director (Operations) at Headquarters must endorse to certify successful completion. > Code of Conduct
Every intern engaged by the Authority must observe LPAI’s Code of Conduct, which includes: a) Submitting a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) form on joining, to preserve strict secrecy, confidentiality, and privacy. b) Bringing their own laptop or tablet for work. c) Following the general rules and regulations that apply to Authority employees. d) Observing the Authority’s confidentiality protocol and not disclosing confidential information about the Authority, its work, or its policies to anyone outside it. e) Presenting their work at academic forums, seminars, and conferences only with the Authority’s prior permission, while safeguarding confidential information. f) Stating clearly, in any paper or document they write or publish, that the views are personal and do not represent the Authority. g) Following the Authority’s guidance on dealing with third parties. h) Not interacting with or representing the Authority before third parties unless specifically authorised to do so as part of their role. i) Not engaging with or representing the Authority to the media, print or electronic. j) Behaving professionally in all dealings with the Authority and the public. > Termination
a) The Authority may end an intern’s engagement whenever it judges that their services are no longer needed. b) The Authority may terminate an intern’s services at any time, with immediate effect and without giving reasons. c) An intern wishing to leave should give two weeks’ notice, though the Authority may require up to one month’s notice for interns staying beyond two months; the supervisor may waive this requirement depending on the intern’s role. d) On termination, the intern must hand back any documents, equipment, or assets issued by the Authority, including badges or ID cards. e) Legal action may follow if a terminated individual is found still presenting themselves as employed by the Authority. Resolution of Implementation Challenges The Chairperson, or someone nominated by them, has the authority to resolve any difficulties that arise in implementing these guidelines.
