AICTE – Grant For Augmenting Infrastructure In North Eastern Region
About AICTE – Grant For Augmenting Infrastructure In North Eastern Region
Introduction
a. This scheme, previously run as the Special Scheme for NER, funds institutions in the North Eastern Region to tackle campus water shortages, add backup power, and bring in high-speed internet — addressing everyday infrastructure struggles students face. The Indian Institute of Technology–Guwahati implements it.
b. Much of North East India sits in hilly terrain where water supply is irregular through the year, leaving institutes without secure water during the dry season. The scheme funds water-harvesting projects so supply holds up even then.
c. Continuous electricity is scarce across much of urban and rural North East India, which hampers both daily life and technical education. The scheme funds captive solar power installations, and where solar isn’t viable, generators can be procured instead — helping institutes cope with the shortfall in conventional power supply.
d. Internet access in the North East also falls short of what’s needed. To help close this gap, the scheme funds setting up an initial internet connection, though the institution must cover ongoing costs afterward.
Objective To improve how efficiently technical institutes in North East India’s remote areas function, by fixing gaps in water, electricity, and internet connectivity on campus.
